Fiona Undercover

The smell of pizza wafting from the box was making Fiona’s mouth water. They were parked outside the Mountain Shadow Police Station, getting ready to put their plan into motion.

“Tell me again why we needed to stink up my car with fake cheese and cured pig intestines?”

Fiona wrinkled her nose. “You can’t walk in there empty-handed. You came to bring your brother dinner, which is something nice people do.”

Gabriel shot her a dubious look. Maybe him doing something nice for Wesley would make his brother suspicious.

As it was, it didn’t look as though they’d be getting away with much. The parking lot in front of the police station was lit up like a baseball diamond. There were three black sedans with government plates parked out front, which made her think the FBI was in town.

Infiltrating the police evidence locker to steal back La Ruota Oscura was going to be harder than Fiona had thought. Normally, she wouldn’t have attempted it, but she hadn’t managed to find an incantation they could use in any of her books.

She’d come dressed in a charcoal pants suit and her most boring shoes. With a little luck, anyone who spotted her poking around would just assume she was one of the feds.

“Shit,” Gabriel breathed. “They have someone working the front desk.”

Fiona’s heart sank. It was Marge. She recognized her from the police department’s website. Apparently, Marge had been promoted from daytime receptionist to police dispatcher, which was why she was manning the desk at ten o’clock at night.

“Here goes nothing,” Gabriel grumbled, opening the door and climbing out of the car. He took the pizza from Fiona through the still-broken passenger window and strode confidently toward the entrance.

Fiona hung back to see what would happen when Gabriel reached the glass doors. He just nodded at Marge and lifted the pizza, and she beamed at him from behind her desk.

Fiona was fairly certain she wouldn’t be that lucky. Marge was unlikely to remember her from the time Fiona had come in for questioning, but she lacked Gabriel’s authoritative stride that allowed him to go just about anywhere.

Emptying her purse onto the front seat, she rifled around for something that might help her slide in without attracting suspicion. All she had in there were some old Tic Tacs, a tube of lip gloss, and a broken pair of sunglasses — nothing in the way of a fake mustache or a maintenance uniform like what people wore in the movies. But then she found a hard plastic ID card on a generic yellow lanyard. It was her season pass to Arapahoe Basin from two ski seasons ago. Had it really been that long since she’d cleaned out her purse?

Shoveling the rest of the junk back inside, she pulled her purse onto her shoulder and hung the lanyard around her neck. She straightened her back, closed the door, and strode toward the entrance with purpose.

Her stomach clenched as she breezed through the doors, trying to look as though she belonged there.
